    Default KwikFit - how much?

Talk about rip-off. I went in their Lewisham branch hoping to replace a flat tyre, they wanted 171.00 quid for one Eagle NCT 5 215.50R17

The odd thing is they are selling the same tyre on their website for 108.00 quid. Anyone know if I can get it cheaper?

the price on the site is a good i reckon.. but your quoted cost including fitting is a con.. Can you buy the tyre on its own and then take it elsewhere to fit it?

According to their site they will fit that tyre and dispose of the old one for £119.77 so somebody at the branch is skimming and making a tidy sum on the side.. Any reason why the tyre can't be repaired by a proper tyre place..?

I didn't think to ask, at the time I was so surprised by the quote all I could do was think about getting out of the shop.

Too right, I'll be flagging that up with Kwik-Fit's head office. I'll be paying for the tyre online and going back to the same branch, I really want to see the looks on their faces when the till says £119.77 and not £170.00

The puncture is in the sidewall, it can't really be fixed.

Captive market, sadly, "I need a replacement tyre, and I need it now"
Unlike when you know your tyres are nearly worn out and you can spend time searching around

It's fairly similar with most things...
    Car Insurance
    Motorway petrol stations
The list goes on and on

However, there are several different types of Good Year NCT5 in 215/50R17 and they may have quoted for the XL version, either as that is what they looked at or all they have in stock in that size

What's the other tyre like on the same axle? If nearly worn, consider changing size to 225/45/17 and buying two tyres.

But definately get shot of the NCT5 in preference for a pair of decent and less expensive tyres.

Did the tyre actually need replacing? or are they pulling the "can't be repaired mate" con?

A car must be stopped with such a defect, if the car has a spare the wheel with that tyre removed and replaced by the spare
However, that assumes you are aware of the defect in the first place!
The tyre fitter then has a duty of due diligence, advising the defect may be outside of the repairable area (which it apparently was it is was in the sidewall)

it doesnt work like that , you have to buy it on line at 119.77 , and im sure they send someone out to fit it , you wont go anywhere near the kwik fit garage

best thing to do is find the cheapest one deliverd from whatever company and then take it to a normal tyre place ( not one of the big high street chains ) and ask them to put it on for you shouldnt charge you more than a £10
