    Vehicle : Vectra C Estate (150) Nav

    Default Self-removing gear knob

I thought I'd offer some words of advice for anyone who finds themself with the above "feature"...

After having placed the knob back on and smacked it hard with my palm several times, only to have it pop-off again the first time I went into reverse, I decided to fix it "good and proper". I put a 6"x3"x2" squidgy screen demister pad over the knob (to reduce the impact) and then gave it "a proper good smacking" with a wooden hammer (of the 'hammer and chisel' variety). This has indeed had the desired effect and the knob has remained securely fastened for a couple of weeks so far (I didn't even put any glue in!). However, my enthusiastic efforts had the rather undesirable side-effect of cracking the perspex over the number grid in several places. The numbers are still readable but it certainly detracts from the otherwise good looks of the interior.

So, if you are experiencing the same issue, I can recommend finding a circular object to place over the knob such that it only rests on the outer-ring of the knob (not the perspex cover), before whacking away to your heart's content.

Anyone know how much a new knob costs? Is it worth upgrading to a VXR one while I'm about it?!

I "fixed" mine by putting two small pieces of electrical tape over the end of the shaft before pushing the knob back on. It's not the prettiest solution but it hasn't failed yet.

Perhaps easiest is to prise off the number indicator insert thingy with a sharp knife or similar (They push back on and locate with lugs) then put a piece of wood over the top of the knob and tap on with a mallet _ wishI'd thought of that before smashing mine up !

If you do wish to replace the insert and have a 6 speed and are struggling to find one - Vauxhall don't sell them separately and the only ones I could find on Ebay were 5 speed - then a reasonably cheap replacement is one of these for a VW

May take a little while to come from Hong Kong. Prise the insert off. Break the tabs off the back, as the fitting is different and then Glue or even Blu Tack in place

this seems quite a common fault at about 3 years or so.

mine fell off. so i hit it back on. but was only temp fix and increasingly it would just fall off at the most inconvenient times.

so thinking laterally, i used a blob of grab adhesive. its never moved since

a lot cheaper than a new gear stick or new knob.

guess any flexible sealant would do though

I gave mine a good old smack after several attempts it has worked. Think you need to build up some anger after trying a few times!

Almost 5 months since I posted this and it's still OK.
