confused lose reception once engine is started

    Hello
I usually find the answer to problems with my car by searching this forum but not finding answer this time.

I have just put a pure highway DAB radio converter in the car with an external mounted aerial.
It sounds great with the ignition on but no engine running. As soon as I start the engine i start losing sound, according to the display on the PURE unit I still have all the bars on the signal reception but actual symbol for the reception is fading off screen then coming back. I can drive around and it is still poor but I can pull up anywhere and turn engine off it sounds great again.

I have tried checking with PURE site and no mention of this problem. Could this be a problem with the car itself.

The obvious question is have you checked all your connections thoroughly ?

I assume that you have, but sometimes it's the simplest things.

Another consideration, is this...do you have two coax connections to your DAB unit?, and if so, are they the right way round?..
you know one in and one out.

Could some sort of resistor sort it? My radio reception gets very hissy when the HIDs are on but fine on sidelights.

Thanks for the replies, Unfortunately I didnt make myself clear.

The dab converter is not hard wired in. it is a stand alone unit which then transmits to my cars FM radio. there is no AUX input at the FM radio in the car otherwise I would use that. I know I am not going to get digital quality using the FM radio to play the signal, I just prefer stations available on DAB.
I have used the same method in the past with an fm transmitter for my Ipod but I did have to increase volume at radio in car quite considerably.

I have had reply from PURE support who think my car is giving out some sort of magnetic interference when the engine is running and as this is rare they cannot offer any advice.

The usual suspect is the alternator but as the vec has so many electronic gadets it could be anything.
A couple of lads at work have the pure dab things and they have both just changed from Fords to Vx and they are rubbish in their cars (Astra and Zafira).

But does it take its power from the car? If so go to any good car audio place and they will sort you out with a resistor to put onto your alternator. I'm not that up on it but sometimes if you have an amped system it would do the same and the resistor would sort it. Bad earths I believe would also cause it. I recon if you pop a thread up on a car audio site they should be able to help you. Or have a look in the audio section of this forum and PM the couple of guys who are up on this sort of stuff, Ian Highlander is one and a guy called Chris Nock.

Keep us posted on the outcome as i'd like to know if i'm talking rubbish or not LOL

If we are talking EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference), are we using a resister, or a capacitor, like in the old days of electrical interference, where capacitors were strapped across any electrical motor to subdue electric "noise".

God knows mate, its a vague memory of a common problem back in the day. I know If I fit a 2.4 manifold I have to mod the alternator so the larger manifold fits, I have to fit one of these (little thing in the pic) when I take the old one off it causes interference. I'm just throwing ideas into the pot for the more educated to think about.

the PURE unit can be used as a personal radio with batteries and headphones as the aerial.
I have just sat in the with it set up like this so no interference from power supply, stations playing fine . I had the car radio turned on but I wasnt transmitting the pure signal to it (you cant with headphones in) no interference. I then started the engine and lost all the stations.

I am guessing resistors and capacitors would only help if the problem was in the power supply.
