Question OSF inner CV joint replacement

the clip that hold the inner cv boot on has come off again, it was off when i bought the car.. I suspect the cv joint itself has long since lost all its grease and is worn out.. My MOT is next month and i do not wanna get caught and end up paying top dollar, one place has already told me i needed to change the whole driveshaft as you cannot get the joint separately, wrong... besides, vx want £465 + vat for a complete new driveshaft

Now vx will sell me a replacement inner cv joint kit for £179 + vat or I can buy one of these from the bay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-VECTR...item20a8f075df

Other than the obvious large price difference, does anybody have any experience with these patent parts.. Also can anybody advise as to whether this is a DIY job or a mechanics job?

After trying to change my inner tie rods then paying out a fortune to get it done properly I can only advise just get a mechanic to do it as you probably don't have the correct tools to do it. Just my thoughts and empty wallet talking.

Try a motor factors for parts. They will give you the correct part and you can take it back if anything is wrong. The local mechanic will probably use the same shop. I personally wouldn't buy off ebay especially as there is no picture.

Isnt the ebay item just the boot, clip and grease? Thats how I read the ad..

If it were me, assuming there is not clunking/loud clicking on slow full lock turns, then I would assume the CV joint is OK, and just repack the joint and replace the boot.

no mate, read the first line again and you will note it says "all our CV joints come with clip, grease, boot kit and hub nut"

I appreciate what your saying about waiting till it makes a grinding noise, but the exposure to the winter rain i reckon has already washed out all the grease i had repacked into it last autumn, it does clunk a little hense my reason for singling it out for change. I can buy this part and change it or wait until I pre MOT it and then find out... either way I do not like things being worn on my cars anyway and am quite proactive when it comes to such things.. I prefer to replace parts when i suspect they are worn rather than past it and wait to be told its an MOT failure or dangerous etc..
