Default How to check oil level on 3.0 Diesel Auto box

    Hi
Cant see a dip stick. I need to check the oil level. Is there a hole to check fluid level and is this done hot or cold?
Is it under the battery box as I cant see it?

Should the auto gearbox oil be changed as part of a service. Any ideas about what mileage this is?

    Thanks
    N

I decided to drain the oil. I got 3.1 litres out. It was brown/black and a fair amount of swarf on the magnetic drain plug. the car has done 92000 miles. Dont think it has been done before from the service history.
I have not been able to get any information about change intervals or the oil required or the quantity.
I decided to put 3.6 litres of ATF dextron 2 back in. Have used the car 10 miles and so far so good.

Come on garage mechanics. There are lots of us 3.0 diesel auto owners in this community that need to benefit from your advice. Haynes dont do a manual. There is no info out there. I would be very grateful to know if I have done anything that is correct. I'm just guessing and worried.

Any other owners of the same config out there that know about this?

I have found out from a Halfords list in the store by the Oils that the gearbox is meant to take 7 litres. Presumably when draining some of this stays in the torque converter. Has anyone any information on the amount that should come out?

What type is the gearbox? AF33 or something else?

The AF33 and AF40 are both covered in the Haynes manuals and give capacities.

you cant change the filter is a complete strip and rebuild of the gearbox to do this i know stupid design but thats the japs for you (gearbox is made by aisin warner so is japanese)

i didnt have to remove any selector you will however need around 8-10 litres of oil as its a multiple part drain and flush the oil you need is type 4 atf and is quite expensive comma make one and call it asw (must be this oil or wont work properly)

release the drain plug underneath to drain the fluid probably only 2-3 litres i then replaced it and refilled through the sensor hole on the top as it saved removing anything other than 1 bolt check the level using the dipstick with the engine running in park once level correct leave running for 5 mins take for a quick spin (3 miles ish mixed driving) repeat this process around 3 times.
reason for this is the box just wont release the oil properly and like i said its kind of a flush fill process.

If it's a 2004 then you have the AF33 gearbox. The dip stick is on the right side of the engine bay (when you look at it) burried deep down the cable mess so it might be hard to spot. It's green and it's held in place by a bolt, not sure what size though.
