    Default Vectra SRI Engine 'Knocking'

I currently own a Vectra 1.8 SRI 56 plate (Sept 2006) which after only 48000 miles has developed an engine problem. It first started as a loud 'ticking' sound from the top of the engine which over the course of 24 hours and around 40 miles turned into a loud 'knocking' sound. Could this be a likely tappet problem (or something else) and is it easily cured by me as quite a capable DIYer or will it require some major engine work at a local garage. The car has been regularly serviced by Vauxhall to the recommended periods/mileage (the last one 6 months and 8000 miles ago), is only used for travelling to/from work, occasionally goes on motorways and has never been over 80mph.
Any suggestions or advice will be welcome and appreciated.

    Hello again guys

This issue has moved on a little since I was last here. I had the engine looked at by a recommended local garage who after consulting an apparent aquaintence who supposedly works for Vauxhall immediately identified the problem as 'faulty cams'. These apparently have an oil supply that has leaked out causing wear. I don't know the ins and outs of engines to that much detail but the garage were advised to not even attempt a repair as it is very costly and should be returned to Vauxhall. They were also informed that this issue is a known problem with this engine but I can't find any evidence to support that.
I have subsequently complained to Vauxhall Customer Services stating that this was a Network Q vehicle bought from a Vauxhall Dealer and serviced regularly by Vauxhall and I would not expect an engine with only 48K to suffer problems with the cam. They have offered to take a look free of charge and possibly offer a percentage 'good will payment' towards the cost of the repair.
Has anyone heard of this type of payment before on a car out of warranty and heard of this fault being a known issue with this engine. If I need to make some sort of claim against Vauxhall I would need to make a good case if I intend to place the blame with poor inspection/servicing.
Also I had a 'cam sensor' replaced last year under warranty. Would that be related to the problem I have now and should this more serious problem have been spotted at the time or during the last service 9 months ago? Any comments?

Is it the VVT engine? If so it uses oil pressure to alter the cam timing, low oil/pressure is not healthy for them at all.

It is a VVT engine. Is this a common problem?

THB mate I've not really come across it before, all I know is they need a good oil supply and can become noisy when running a bit low.

    Some more information regarding this problem. After being inspected by Vauxhall themselves I have been told that the following needs to be replaced;
    Engine timing parts
    Valve gear sprockets
    Cam pulleys
Correct me if I am wrong but according to Vauxhall official recommendations should I not be looking at around 100,000 miles or ten years for this sort of work (not that I would ever consider keeping the car that long)? The cost quoted for this is an extortionate £964!!
I am currently having the case looked at by a Customer Services Manager as my initial claim for a ‘good will payment’ towards the repair has been declined. This car has not even reached half the estimated life for these major engine parts before massive premature failure. Although it is 6 months out of warranty does anyone on this forum believe I have a case against Vauxhall given that this car is a Network Q vehicle, has been serviced every year by Vauxhall, at no point have I been informed of a possible timing assembly failure and should not even need this work for another six and a half years or 52,000 miles.
    Any advice would be welcome.

I'd like to think they would due to the milage. Push on with VX customer services.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Hi, I am having the same issues with mine, (engine judder on start-up, followed by a tapping sound in the engine). Let me know how you get on with this. Mine is also a 06 reg and out of warranty, done 72k miles tho.

I reckon I have a similar problem on my 1.8i VVT SRi 56 reg. It's been making rattling noises on startup for a while now which then disappeared. Today it has started making a continual knocking noise from the top of the engine L/H side. Has been serviced by Vauxhall on time. Will be very unhappy if it is a problem with parts supposed to last a lot longer than the 48,000 miles I have done....!!

I know it sounds like a silly question but couldn't you go to trading standards with a case that vx sold you a product that is not fit for purpose, especially seeing as all the vx technical data clearly states that the interval for replacing the belt/chain is 100,000 (doesn't say that the cams and pulleys should be changed at all). Judging by the replies on here it is becoming a common problem and vx are doing their usual trick of washing their hands of it.
