    Default Rain sensing wipers

    I have a 2003 2.2 LS.

Since the day I bought the car in 2007 the rain sensing wipers seem to have
had a mind of their own. When its only spitting they may work for a bit
then go onto max. speed when there is no need and stay on this for maybe
a minute and then perhaps stop altogether for a minute. This may repeat time
and again. Somtimes then when it rains heavier they dont seem to go as
    frequent as they should.

Is this normal ? Does everyone else have them working like this ?
It doesnt seem to matter if i have the sensor set to the left, middle or right.
The full speed mode when its only spitting has reduced me to not using
the rain sensing mode at all. I just push the stalk down for a single swipe now
or put on standard if rain is heavier but it's doing my head in.

I wonder if perhaps the sensor is faulty and needs replacing ? Obviously I dont want to have the cost of replacing this if this is the way this rain sensor works for everyone and it will make no difference.

Any advice and other experiences would be most welcome, Cheers

Daft as it might sound is there any "traffic film" on the windscreen ( more so the sensor area) this might affect the sensors performance. Try cleaning the sensor area so it is as clean as you can get it. Might just work?.

On the odd occasion mine misbehave, a flick of the sensitivity control wheel from one extreme to the other and back, seems to reset them.

As ed says, if the area around the sensor is dirty etc, it can effect how the rain sensors work, failing this it could be a dodgy sensor as this is what tells the wipers what speed to work on judging by how much water is on the screen. Also check the sensor hasn't come loose somehow and is attached properly and is where it should be, and also may be worth checking the plug that plugs into the sensor to make sure it's not loose

after all of the above, if u have no luck, u could just disconnect the sensor and use ur wipers just like any other normal car. simplez.

Many thanks for the advice guys. I've tried to ensure windscreen is clear
and tried movin the sensitivity back and forward but the thing is
still temperamental. Will have to maybe replace the sensor.

Thanks to everyone for taking time to reply.
