    Default Ebay Worries

Had a few items for sale on ebay and all were paypal only.

One item sold and the buyer sent a message after the auction saying he cannot pay by paypal and is requesting my bank sort code and account number to pay money into.

I gave him sort code and account number for an old account that only has a penny in it but is still active but he is asking for bank name and my full name?!

    Sound dodgy?

Possibly its ok BUT the fact that alarm bells are ringing with you and you have posted this up, I think you have your answer.

Tell them they have sufficient information to pay you by standing order - a sort code and account number is all they need.

Honestly though if that was me I wouldnt have given them that info either, and I certainly wouldnt be giving them my name and my banks name.

Sounds a bit dodgy to me mate, would never send any personal info like that out, If you state paypal only in your listing, then thats all you should have to accept

Under no circumstances should you give you details to a complete stranger. If can't pay by Paypal they can always pay by postal order or a bankers draft. Can accept a cheque but wait for payment to clear before posting.

I have told him he has enough info for a transfer, if he still wants more then I will just issue a non-paying bidder strike. He is the one who breached the rules IMO.

He did not even contact me before bidding to check if an alternative method was acceptable, this is what makes me mad.

Don't be having any of it. This doesn't sound right.

If you stick to your original listing, i.e. Paypal only - and this is binding in an auction - he won't be able to do anything.
If he refuses to pay you via Paypal he won't be allowed to give you negative feedback and will be given a non-paying bidder strike.

I would raise an issue with Paypal's resolution centre:

    http://resolutioncentre.ebay.co.uk/

    or give them a call.

Not dodgey at all. Before I got my paypal account up and running I used to pay via bank transfers. My bank always requested the bank account details, bank name and details and account owner full details (name, address).

i have to agree, i have recieved many payments this way, its sounds like he actually wants to pay the money directly into the bank over the counter, the bank will ALWAYS ask for a name of the account holder so as to certify the correct details, elcetronic tranfers dont require the bank name, hence the sort code, there is very little he can do with the details you provide. hth mick

He will need your name, bank name, and sort code and account number to pay in cash to your bank, thats fair. If you are that worried then get the money once he has paid and then close the account.
