Default New member & new (used) Vectra LS 1.8 - with problems...

    Hi, New member here...

Also new (used 54 plate) Vectra LS 1.8. I think I have a few problems, please let me know your thoughts.

    1. Coolant light - for the second time in the last week this light has come on. It is been on constantly since Tuesday and today, after a long drive (~100 miles), it has stopped blowing warm air - just cold. I will top it up tomorrow and keep an eye on it. Any thoughts on the likely cause / causes of this?

    2. Cruise control - this seemed to work fine when I bought the car 2 weeks ago. But now it only works intermittently, and seems to turn itself off for no reason. It did it twice today after about 1 mile of cruising.

    3. A rattle from what sounds like it could be in the dashboard / under the bonnet? When setting off in first, just before you get to the bite point, it makes a rattle noise. It has only started to do this yesterday. I have also noticed a very very slight ringing when driving - again it sounds like it is inside the dashboard perhaps. It is very subtle but sounds like metal vibrating. Am I paranoid or is this clutch rattle/flywheel I have read about.......!!???

    4. And maybe this is real paranoia - but again when setting off in a low gear - it sometimes feels like a very brief loss of power then the car shoots forward. First time it happened I put it down to my cr*ppy clutch control but it's done it a few times since (mainly in first gear, but also in second I think) and I'm starting to doubt that it is my poor driving to blame.

Any help is appreciated. The car is still covered under a purchase warranty and 2 year extended warranty from the garage - I just need to make sure what I describe to them is a genuine problem and ensure it is fixed in one go when it is booked in this coming Thursday.

    Hope someone can help.

    Thanks.

Im not a mechanic by any means so don't quote me, but im thinking you have a leaky or broken water pump start engine and look for a spray of water assuming the tank is filled, also could be head gasket but do a search on here to check all symptoms for that. The rattle may just be the cover at the exhaust or could be a sign that the clutch may be on its way out. Warranty will cover most major things so I wouldn't worry too much. Im sure other posters will be on to help soon

I used to get this loss of power esecially as i went from 1st to 2nd. The car would just not respond. I did the 'airbox mod' and it is better but still get the ocassional 'flat spot'

    Same car, 2003 1.8ls

Hi mate cant help you with your rattle. Your problem with the coolant light sounds as if you have a water leak if you have to keep topping it up. Is it overheating? On my 06 1.8 I sometimes get the coolant warning light but this is just an iffy sensor. The 1800 is prone to be erratic when setting off mine does it all the time. There are loads of posts about it. The faulty clutch problem only appears when the engine is cold and usually only affects 06 plate motors. Again lots of posts. Hope this helps

    1. 1.8's suffer from faulty thermostats, would look at that first.
2.The spring under the either the clutch/accelerator/brake (cannot remember which) is broken. its a known fault and VX have an uprated item to fit and it takes 2 mins or less to fix. (this may be the noise issue as well, possible the power one as well)

Peter Griffin: Ah, c'mon, Lois, isn't 'bribe' just another word for 'love'?

Thanks all for your suggestions. An update....

Took the car out today and after 10 miles, and 2.5 litres of water, the coolant light was on again. Another two litres of water got me back to the main dealer, whereupon the coolant light came on again. So this morning I lost 4.5 litres of water in no more than 20 miles.

The main dealer has it now and I have a courtesy car for a few days. I've reported the other issues - we'll see what happens. I will keep this updated.

I had an issue with the coolant light on my 2004 1.8 but no-where near the extent of yours mine drank about half a litre every week, got it fixed after 2 weeks, was a water pump.

never had another problem from it after that.

see what the garage recommends, think of it this way though, any part they change even if it doesnt fix the problem, will still be a brand new part on your car!

Could you see where the coolant was running from? Hopefully its just a hose thats burst.
