Default Air con condensor - DIY replaceable??

Hi all, I hope this is the right section as the actual air con forum is inaccesible to me for some reason. Whilst fitting front parking sensors I saw this on my air con condensor. As this probably confirms what the dealer said and the condensor is in fact leaking, is its replacement a DIY job? Many thanks.

Just make sure the seals aren't leaking.

you should be able to replace it - but make sure you know what your doing as freon from the ac system is a caronagenic and as such all dealers and technicians are now undergoing retraining for new legislation coming into place this June on safe handling so make sure its empty before you start playing

are you going to replace the unit then get it regassed somewhere ?

Cheers for that. I may give it a go then as I don't really want to pay the dealer £450ish.

Sorry, our posts crossed. Yes I would get it regassed professionally. Don't know what to do about the remaining gas. Is it possible to safely run the air con until all the gas leaks out?

its dependant on how much gas is still present - as the system is pressurised if it drops below a certain level the the compressor wont engage - but there could still be quite a bit left - the system needs to be evacuated - this is normally part of the proceedure on regassing

so if your going to get it regassed ask the garage if they can ensure the system is empty - replace the parts - then take it back for a regas **ensure they pop some uv dye into the system as well on regassing as this will make it easier to identify any future/further leaks from the system with a uv lamp and special goggles= just like CSI

Many thanks for that. I'll definitely have a good think about DIY replacement. Time to hit the web for the bits. Cheers.

Is yours a CDTI or petrol.

The reason I ask is my AC condenser looks the same but it was in fact the intercooler that had popped.
