    Default iPhone Unlocking

Can anybody tell me the best way to unlock my iPhone 3g so that I can use non O2 sim cards. Don't trust the dudes on the stalls in the high street to do it as when I had my Sony erricson unlocked it stopped working a couple of hours later.

i suggest you contact 02 and ask them to release the imei so that you can use another air time provider - they cannot refuse this as they no longer hold the rights to the exclusivity of the iphone

any other method i.e. jailbreak is generally by using pirate software - which we cannot condone on the forum and could end up rendering the iphone as dead ...

please when responding to this thread remember that the suggestions need to be legal - otherwise the posts will be deleted

Thanks for the advice I'll give them a call when my contract comes to an end next month, I didn't realise they would do that but I expect they don't shout about it

    indeed they dont
    - but when your contract expires they have no legal right to refrain you from using the phone as you wish with any other airtime provider

Good to know I have the option as I may switch to Tesco pre pay after my contact is up. I pay £45 per month at the minute to O2 and only use the web, 100-200 texts and 200-300 minutes, no point paying for loads of minutes that I dont use.

Tesco use O2 so a Tesco sim may work without having to do anything.

PS. I have jailbroken my phone and there is no illegal software on it. I done mine to add features you don't get as standard. It turns a near crippled phone into something a lot more useful.

For example, you can have skype running constantly with background enabling and insomnia (stops the phone going to sleep), without them the connection is lost as soon as the phone sleeps (obviously your battery will suffer, but handy for when in the house etc).

    My $0.02

PPS Is jail-breaking actually illegal (obviously the real kind is) ??

    Lofty,
just to clarify the software used to Jailbreak your phone is illegal !!

this is what i was reffering to in my initial post - the only legal way to run other software/operators is with apples/operators permission..

    and i quote

"Jailbreaking an iPhone constitutes copyright infringement and a DMCA violation, says Apple in comments filed with the Copyright Office as part of the 2009 DMCA triennial rulemaking. This marks the first formal public statement by Apple about its legal stance on iPhone jailbreaking"

"Apple's copyright infringement claim starts with the observation that jailbroken iPhones depend on modified versions of Apple's bootloader and operating system software."

so there you have it in black and white - with the links in blue as well
