Default Manual (DMF) v automatic gearboxs

Further to my earlier thread about the DMF rattle on my 1.9 Diesel estate...
I have been looking into the subject of DMF's and see that they and their problems are by no means confined to Vauxhall/GM/Fiat.
You tube have loads of example of knackered DMF's.
Audi recommend a DMF with a new clutch making that a £1000 job, US cars, Fords, VW's all suffer.
I can see why the DMG was designed but, it is clearly not up to the job when a major component only lasts 50k (and that is doing well it appears)
Funny isn't it when the automatic option seems less hassle over a manual... Drivers of a certain age usually associated autos with 'trouble'
    I know I did
Just as a discussion point I see that you can buy solid flywheel conversion kits but, the consensus is that no having a DMF will wreck your gearbox...

    Ummm...not impressed of Plymouth here

Has anyone changed a clutch/DMF at home? I have been looking at Haynes and would be working on my own.

    Doable or not??

I wouldn't go manual again, the Insignia Auto box is sweeeeeeeeeeeet. Also on Insignia it's only 0.1 sec slower to 60 than the manual.

In fact you can actually pull away quicker without wheelspin in the Auto, boot a manual and the tyres will light up if your not carefull.

My Vec is a Auto and its the 1.9 150 with a Remap and handles it superbly but it can be a little thirsty when driven hard

After much head scratching, phoning around etc etc the best price I can get in Plymouth for a DMF, clutch ( inc release bearing) & clutch cylinder in £885 all in.
    Does that sound about right?
