Fault code readers, EML and glow plug query

The car is in the dealers at the minute for intake manifold (but that is another story!!) but they have found a stored fault code to do with the glow plugs. They are running the diagnostic and I will find out in the morning what the crack is. The thing is it got me thinking about these code readers you can buy. Do they just read the code or can they reset it once you have sorted the problem? It is costing me £60 just for them to plug it in and a reader might be an investment for the future. Anyone any ideas?
Also if it is glow plug problems I am presuming that I can get them done at a cheaper independent garage. If so would they be able to reset EML or is it a dealer job?

Some dealers an do it, but generally only tose who haveTech 2. There are plenty of code readers, but I have 2 and niether can read anything other than engine fault codes and the airbag light, although they can be cleared.

what models of code readers do you have? thinking of getting one myself but it's this issue that is putting me off.
