Default Head Gasket? Fresh Gunky Mayo!!

    Hey folks,

I just been to look at a car, an Astra 2002 1.6, and the engine run's sweet, but as a matter of course I always open the oil filler cap and guess what, loads of gunky mayo.

I even opened it whislt it was running and you could see the fresh gunky mayo bubbling up, it was even on the dipstick...

    ... deffo HEAD GASKET???

I think the DIPSTICK gives it away, I have a GSI and its like a Hellman's factory the amount of MAYO I've scooped out over the last 10 months. But there is never any on the DIPSTICK and the engine runs fine with no loss of power. I believe it is common on this engine when doing lots of short journeys where the oil doesn't warm up and allow the moisture to evaporate.

But what you described sounds much worse... you can always check for oil in the radiator water. Sure sign!

I checked the Rad water tank and this was clear.

Thing is, I have seen many cars over the last few weeks and every single one has had a little element of mayo, but has been more watery and like wet oil, which I can put down to the short journeys you mention. BUT this was pure pure gunk! Poor lady who owned was quite sincere and said she did see it and a friend said to take for a blast down the motorway for 20 miles and it will clear up.....I think it will probably blow up!!

Too right mate, I wouldnt take the chance on it as the car is intended for the misses and the lad so dont want ot take any chances at all!

Used cars are ****ing pricey again!!!!

indeed they are are - now that the £2000 px deal on new cars has finished - people still want good quality second hand cars - and thats whats going to bump up the costs - along with newer cars with larger engines getting hit with higher road tax

Short journeys will build up an amount of crap (as mentioned), but never on the dipstick (as mentioned).
They also rot the exhaust from the inside out :\

It's possible that a breather hose is blocked, which would cause that same issue due to moisture being unable to escape from the head and crank case, however it would suggest that it's not been serviced properly too. Either way... Not good.
