Default Aftermarket Upgrade for CDR 2005

    Hi,

I've just picked up a 54 Signum 3.2 with the CDR 2005 head unit and to be fair, this audio system is absolutely awful..

The sound quality really is as bad as the radio in my wife's fiat panda.. (No joke..)

I'm not looking for heart pounding 'drum and base' at ridiculous sound levels, but am looking for a system with good clarity at a decent volume.

In my Vectra B, I did nothing more than add a JVC headunit and wiring adaptor to get reasonable sound quality from the speakers, albeit not much volume.

In my BM 325, I fitted an Alpine headunit, with wiring converter and steering control adaptor to give amazing sound quality at quite heavy volumes.

As you can see.. I'm not into ripping everything apart and fitting amps, subs and the like.. (I did put a powered sub in the back of a Vito van, but it was a van.. it needed it..)

I'm happy to pay a bit for an upgrade, but the question is...

    What's my best option?

Can I just get a new headunit with facia, wiring and steering wheel adaptors and use the existing speakers?

Do I need to start replacing speakers in doors etc..

If so, are door speakers direct replacements?

There it is.. I need the simplest upgrade path available to me to give quality sound at decent volumes..

    Any help is appreciated.

Hello mate its strange cos i have a 53 plate siggy with cdr2005 and the sound quality is great loads of base and very clear. It may be your speakers that are no good?

It might be worth checking what is wrong with your current system, because the vauxhall systems are not to bad. Like PORKBALLS29 says, I would check your speakers first. Sometimes people fit aftermarket ones and when reverting the car to standard, do refit them very well. I have seen them out of phase, ones with dented or ripped cones etc...

The cost of a reasonable speaker upgrade is likely to be cheaper than a a head unit, and you don't have the problems of steering wheel controls etc...

If you are not prepared to take the door panels off yourself, why not get halfords to fit you some new speakers for you. It will either solve your problem or make it even better if you still need a head unit....

    Hi,

Thanks for these responses, i'll try and elaborate..

Whilst the system pretends to provide a good bass sound, it's what I call plastic bass.. it's artificial.. It's usually due to a stereo trying to artificially enhance the bass, instead of having the outright power to provide true bass.

This is why on previous cars a simple headunit upgrade to a 50w * 4 has worked a treat.

On those cars the existing speakers have been sufficient to handle the power output from the aftermarket head unit.

On cars where the door speakers were too small to handle any decent output, I found the door itself needed modifying to fit larger speakers, which is not something I really want to do on this car as it is in almost showroom condition.

Also, the grills etc in the doors look like they're handling decent sized speakers anyway..

I found this link to a remote adaptor..

    http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/car-aud...remote-adaptor

I wonder if anyone has done an aftermarket upgrade on one of these units, who might be able to tell me any pitfalls they encountered..

    Thx..

    Yeah, I agree - my CDR2005 sounds mint IMO, I just miss MP3 !!!

My Vec B from a few years ago had some awesome speakers too, didn't give as much bass as my C but sounded really well.

On my old Signum I swapped my CDR2005 out for an Alpine head unit, had steering controls working.

I prefered the sound on the alpine, also had more features including MP3, Ipod connectivity etc.

I posted some pics and info here http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=81058.

Just been doing the same research myself to upgrade my CDR 2005 in my 2003 Vectra LS

For a basic upgrade, New budget head unit (Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine), Component front speakers, and coaxial rears fully fitted with adapters, facias and sound deadening (needed as new system is more powerful and may cause rattles in the doors). Prices ranges from £350-430.

If you want the steering controls add another £40-50 to that.

If you fit yourself you can save £150-200 as it's about 4 hours labour.

In the end I've bought the custom Pioneer Vauxhall Vectra front components and had my CDR 2005 repaired.

    I will fit myself.

I don't have £400 right now to spend on a new system.

Thx Dennis.. you're a star.. so if I get the right adaptors, I can drop an Alpine unit in with steering controls. Great..

I too need Mp3 and iPod, i've also taken a nose at a double DIN from Kenwood today in Halfords which gives full iPod control..

I'll post up when I've done to let folks know what difference I found.

    Thx everyone.
