    Default Space Saver

Is there room for the space saver in my SRI boot to be replaced with a matching alloy to the standard ones on the car?

There is a sort of raiser under the space saver which takes up some space (at least there is in mine). Try taking it all out, jack up one corner and remove a wheel and see if it fits.

Not if it is an estate, there is not too much room to spare, so I look forward to where I can put the alloy if I get a puncture and the car is full.........

so why do they bother with a space saver when it doesn't save that much space. Tie up with tyre manufacturers perhaps??

Manufacturers usually use space saves due to the independent rear suspension on new cars, as the struts meet in the middle directly under where the spare wheel well is, they have to strengthen it, which therefore usually raisers the boot floor, they then put a space saver in, to give the boot as much depth as possible.

However why Vauxhalls don't put a full size steel spare in the Vectra Hatch & Saloon I don't know because they have the room to do it. I suppose it's for cheapness if they have to buy them for the estate they may as well use them for the full range and buy more of them to get them cheaper.

I know a 16" alloy will not go in the estate, unless you remove the spare wheel cover, and then get some wood cut to size.

It's a real pain the bum especially when you tow a caravan for over 3000 miles a year, if you where towing a caravan I don't think using a space saver would be a good idea, hence why we bought a spare alloy, and just put it in when we go on hols.

yeah im sure putting all that weight onto a space saver would not be a good idea....

In some cars you only get a can of Tyreweld and not even a space saver so i suppose we should count ourselves lucky :\

I only got a tin of tyre weld and a compressor in my Astra VXR, keeping the spare Vectra alloy for it though, it fitted in my boot space no problem, wouldn`t trust a space saver as far as I could throw it !!
