when my cars under hard accelaration is seems to lose power and goes into what i found to be called limp home mode but a simple switch off and on again allows car to return to normal

i have a spanner light on dash what are usualy couses?

It sounds like your EGR valve is blocked to me. I suggest you check out the EGR maintetnace threads as this will likely lead you to the solution and show you how to remove, clean and re-assemble the valve.

ok where is it located on 1.9 cdti engine

there's a how 2 for cleaning the EGR, and you could type in EGR in the search button, there's plenty of threads regarding this problem.

This tells you where to find it, do a searth for cleaning it properly which involves drilling a 3mm hole in the top to get the solinoid out.

Hi,
I had the same problem. I took it to a garage with diagnostic equipment. It was just a bit of split pipe, which he replaced in a minute and my cars been good as new ever since. Totally felt the different as soon as I pulled away. Sorry not sure which pipe though.
