    Default GSI owners advice please

Right the 2.0T i brought 2 months ago has now gone back to the dealer i brought it from as they say it's beyond economical repair (don't know why they didn't just say that in the first place). As it seems that pre facelift turbo's are either too expensive (i paid 3k and the few i have found are around 4k) or hard to come by i have found a 02 plate GSI in black which is what i'm hoping to go look at to replace the turbo.
Can anyone give me some advice on what to look out for as i don't want to fall into the same trap as i did with the turbo and if they are any good, like i say it's a 02 plate 3.2 GSI with 90000 on the clock, service history, MOT and tax for 6 months, uprated discs and pads, 40mm drop but not clear if it's half or full leather. The guy has said he won't go any lower than £3200 for it.
    So what do you think.

From my answer on this thread : http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?t=104917

Right... as per my answer the last time someone asked (reiterates most of what's been said) :

Look for lowest genuine mileage you can.

Try for something that is as 'standard' as possible - blinged up/played about with and god knows what bodges are hidden to bite you later.

Make sure cambelt changes have been done - book says something like 8yrs/80k miles, but many of us still choose to go with the 4yr/40k miles standard from the 3.0 days.

Younger model years lost more toys - but decide what expensive toys you deffo want and look for them first - minor things such as EC interior mirror are easy and cheap to fit yourself later.

Usuals of straightness, panel damage, scrappy marked replaced parts, etc can often indicate which side of a hedge it's seen and give you a reasonable idea of how well it's been cared for.

Take a tape and measure the diameter of the front discs - you're looking for the later standard of 314mm. When safe to do so try heavyish breaking from 40/50mph and feel for pulling brakes.

Test drive - drive it like a granny and listen for anything nasty.... do about 20mph in 4th then floor it and see if the clutch slips at all.

Ask if the handbrake recall has been completed - the button really feels pathetically sprung if it hasn't - free replacement by Vx if it's not been done.

Make sure all buttons/switches do what they are supposed to - and switch off again.

Preference is for a manual gearbox - lower cost if anything goes wrong and far more 'driveable' when you fancy making use of the 3.2.

solid engine no turbo going bang make sure cambelt has been done 3k is way over priced for an 02 plate standard is neither here nor there theres not much you can upgrade apart from suspension and brakes avoid a mapped one unless you no its past.
not much diffrence in fuel mileage.

mines a 53 plate 77,000 on the clock and its only worth 3k to a blind man 4k in trade in.

you said it has uprated discs and pads do u mean bigger or after market.

You will love it Used prices seem to be on the up again, you cannot get a nice tidy one for less than 3.5k imo.

I love mine to bits. Great car.

It can be so many things: sensible family car; smooth, quiet cruiser/ mileage eater; load carrier; crazy nutter of a cross country machine... And mine can return over 34 mpg cross country and not hanging about! Not many cars could touch that level of capability.

Hope you enjoy yours too! Sounds like a MUCH better deal than the 90k miler.

    Peterborough meet... This weekend... Hmmm...
