    Default whirring noise

Hi i have had my vectra for a week now 1.9 cdti and i notice a whirring noise that coming from some where on the engine it is not the gear box as when the clutch is depressed it is still there and it changes speed with the revs, is it the PAS pump or does that just run at a constant speed? sounds like some thing driven of the belt but i haven't had time to have a good poke around yet. car has 63k.

    thanks

Probably turbo, does it get more aggressive if you power hard and back off quickly ?

nah doesn't do it like that, reminds me more of an old style belt driven power steering pump noise, maybe one of the timming belt tensioners or something like that doesn't sound fast enough for a turbo sound and it is linear with the revs, do turbos not get faster than the engine as the revs get faster?

I have a similar noise (1.9), not loud but can hear it with radio off. I had a mechanic mate have a listen. he could not put a reason for it, just advised to let it develope if at all, its not getting any louder.

It could be Air con compressor, I have a similar noise, which is still there after changing Alternator, timing belt tensioner, idler and drive belt tensioner. Noise comes from the right front of the engine bay Doesn't sound serious Just very annoying.

Deisels make that noise - between 1500rpm - 2750rpm its normal. Mines has been doing it for 3 years/68k so I doubt there is anything wrong but if it is squealing/wailing then the bearings are possibly on their way out.
