    Unhappy Computer help required desperately

    Hi all,

My poor HP laptop DV6000 has been giving me grief I went to turn it on today and it just gave me one long loud beep followed by two short ones

I didn't sound good and all I get is a blank screen and the fans running constantly.

I'm pretty stuffed as I can't even get a picture.

Any ideas what may have happened

A bit of recent history.... went to John Lewis to have a new wireless card fitted and came back with all data lost A week long recovery programme got it back but been running slow. Downloaded Adaware and removed 25 tracking cookies etc and then defragmented hard drive. Then ran startup inspector to turn off some of the background programmes and it seemed to run much faster. Well for two days and now this

    Thanks in advance...... Jon

Have you got a boot disk? sounds like a corrupt boot sector - assuming its not booting up.

When it boots up or tries to load Windows, try hitting F8 and select Safe mode.

    Beep codes for Award BIOS
Most Award post codes are displayed to screen. If a beep code occurs the problem is likely occurring before the system can display video (check the video card or memory).
    NOTE: Codes shown may vary.
    Beeps Description
1 short beep POST process completed successfully - normal startup
1 long beep followed by 2 or 3 short beeps Unable to initialize video (to display the post code)
Continuous beeping without pause Serious system related problem such as CPU overheating
    Other beep conditions Memory errors.

Try plugging it into a monitor rather than onboard screen ? its a video card error - but i would defo switch / swap round the memmory modules. Faulty memory can do funny things and it can go at any time.

Make sure too that there are no keys stuck down, no memory sticks in the USB ports & unplug any peripherals you may have

Thanks for your speedy replies chaps

According to google its a fault with the video card preventing the screen working one long and two short beeps.

I will have a look in the forbidden areas to see if anything obvious.

    I'm scared

Yu might not see anything obvious as there could be a hardware conflict between you video card and wireless networking card or there may be a driver conflict between them.

known issue on these machines that the graphics card debonds - not disimilar to the heat sink failing on the xbox360's
needs a repair kit check for a "limited warranty enhancement" (warranty extention)
fairly sure your machine is covered

and confirmed that this was the issue judging by your wifi failure as well - pretty poor diagnosis by john lewis

    and i quote...
"The problem is with the cooling system not directing enough heat away from sorrounding components resulting in multiple component failure, the wireless card not being recognised by your system is the first symptom that will eventually lead to the computer not even getting past the pre BIOS boot stage.

In other words if you have lost your wireless card on your dv6000 series START ACTING NOW, back up any important data as your motherboard has taken a fatal holiday to the Austrailian out back in a heatwave with no water, and there is only one result--- DEATH by hyperthermal meltdown. "

    end quote

Thanks for that All the problems listed are the exact symptoms. If I could get the screen working there is a Bios upgrade available from HP.

Fingers crossed its still covered and thanks again for all your quick reply's.

What a great site this is
