Default Help - Z32SE timing advice needed

    Hi
About a year ago i changed the cambelt, tensioners, water pump, and termostat on my Signum 3.2 V6 Irmy. It all went ok with no real problems except for a gasket not sealing properly which causing an air leak. Ive driven the car for about 18K miles since then until last weekend when just as i started the engine it stalled immediatley. When again turning it over i could tell that the compression wasnt correct, so assumed that the cambelt had either broken or slipped.
At the weekend i strip the belt cover off to see what was wrong. As i though the belt had slipped one tooth on the crank pulley due to a tesioner working loose. So bought a new cambelt kit and replaced the whole lot once again. This time i spent ages lining up all the timing markers on the belt and pulleys to make sure it was perfect. Put it all back together and fired it up, Initially i could hear some extra tapping noises from the valves that id never heard before but that went after a minute or so of warming up. The car felt really different than before, very responsive and more porwerfull than before. But then started to run really lumpy on idle once warmed up. Now after a couple of miles driving the engine management light has come on and the car is in limp mode.

I now think that the timing is too far advanced because the engine runs much hotter than before and the exhaust note from my Powerflow twins, sounds different from before.

Can anyone answer the following for me?
    1) Is there some sort of procedure to follow when adjusting the tensioners so that the timing is perfect?
    2) Has anyone else done a full belt change on the 3.2 engines befoe, as every machanic i have aksed locally, said they wont touch the old VX V6 engines because they are such a pain in the ass for exactly the reasons i mentioned above

One tip for everyone here: Dont lean in the engine bay while its running and get your middle finger caught in the fan belt. F*CK me that really hurts. I spent some time in A&E on Saturday with a mangled finger tip and pulled off nail. Such a school boy error!

I've got some information about setting up camshaft timing on a V6 on my computer at home, I think. I shall check and let you know later.

If the engine runs hot, then the timing is too far retarded. I have heard that setting up the timing on a V6 is tricky. I plan to do mine myself next time but it was only done in January 2009, so it'll wait a while.

Have you looked at the How2 on this estemed forum? Mind you, I don't think that covers recovering "lost" timing on a V6. It is just changing the timing belt.

    Ouch!!

Oh that hurts just thinking about it! Hope your finger recovers ok...

Regarding your timing issue, i remember doing my omega 3.0 belt last year...that wasn't much fun either. Complete b|tch to set-up properly. Have you tried reading the error codes?
