    Default Fault code readers

I have been trying to fix the cruise control on my car but not getting very far. It doesn;t want to stay on for more than a few seconds.

I have bought a new indicator stalk and this has made no difference.
I have tried sticking my foot under the brake and clutch pedals and pulling them up to see if the spring is fault and it makes no difference.

So I am thinking that there may be a fault in the CIM module.

    Anyway to my question...

I was thinking of getting a fault code reader to see if there were any faults listed and see if they are reason for the cruise control failure.
If so I would like to clear these and see if a) they appeared again, b) fix my cruise control issue.

I have seen an orange handheld device on ebay for around £25 that displays the codes on a little screen and allows you to clear them.

And I have seen diagnostics tools (ElmScan5 and OBDLink) that I can connect my laptop to and get a bit more info.

Do any of these fault code readers work?
And are they likely to help me find my cruise control problem??

    Cheers

Bear in mind that cruise control doesn't work until you've applied your footbrake at least once after setting off & also gives up somewhere between 25 & 30mph

Yeah I've definitely pressed the brake before engaging cruise.
I have been using it every day for years. My journey to and from work consists of a couple of miles of back roads (usually in traffic, so brake def used here) then 25 miles of motorway that I just cruise at 70mph. Then another couple of miles of road.

Used to have to clean the contacts at the bottom of the indicator stalk every couple of months, hence why I thought a new stalk would fix it.

I have seen the following fault codes and thought that if they have appeared then its likely a CIM fault?!?!?

    • P0565 Cruise Control On Signal Malfunction
    • P0566 Cruise Control Off Signal Malfunction
    • P0567 Cruise Control Resume Signal Malfunction
    • P0568 Cruise Control Set Signal Malfunction
    • P0569 Cruise Control Coast Signal Malfunction
    • P0570 Cruise Control Accel Signal Malfunction
    • P0571 Cruise Control/Brake Switch A Circuit Malfunction
    • P0572 Cruise Control/Brake Switch A Circuit Low
    • P0573 Cruise Control/Brake Switch A Circuit High
    • P0574 through P0580 Reserved for Cruise Codes
