I have a Vectra 1.9 CDTI 120BHP on a 07 plate, car has done roughly 112k and for the past 20k it has been making a awful noise when ever I go for driving via lots of A roads.
It started the second after I hit a pothole trying to avoid a tractor, I hit it doing about 45 and as soon as i'd cleared the tractor, there was a grinding/thumping sound coming from the front end.
I stopped and checked the wheels and had a quick look under the front end but no visable damage.
Now everytime I take it anywhere near any bumpy, hilly type A and B roads, the kind you find in the dales, etc, this noise starts again.
On motorways it's fine and has no noise.
The noise only starts when I go down a longish type hill after the driving of A and B roads for a while. This noise carries on getting louder and faster the more speed I pick up, so loud infact, that I can hear it from inside the car with the windows closed and doesn't stop until i reach the flat road and then speed upto about 60mph, at which point the noise is so fast, it feels something is gonna break and then it just goes !!
Now for the strange bit, the noise carries on down the hill in everygear from 2nd to 6th and even in neutral, doesn't matter if i press the clutch down when in these gears, etc. Only thing that stops the noise is braking, but as soon as i lift off, the noise starts again.
It has being into Evans Halshaw Horsforth in Leeds and they cannot find anything wrong with it.
Any ideas of what this noise could be ? and do you think i'd be better off trying another garage for its next service in the next few months and see if they can find it. Evans Halshaw seem to inspect the wheel from behind with a torch and never take the thing off if the brakes look ok. Reckon they'd find something if they did it properly.
I did speak to one of the tech guys and he said Vectra C's can suffer with gearbox issues, but as the noise goes when I brake and in neutral then I'm guessing its not a gearbox problem.
Sorry for going on, but the noise is doing my head now on days outs, etc.
