    Question Glow plugs

    A few questions guys

    2ltr DTI

    GLOW PLUGS

What make would you recommend ?

What sort of price am i looking at paying for a full set of good quality plugs ?

Do you need a special tool to take them out ?

Would you recommend them to be fitted by dealers or DIY ?

I know they only take about 10 minutes to fit but all the stories ive heard about them snapping inside the head its got me worried.

Just wondering what you have done to overcome this fear.

    regards,

    Steve.

    Vehicle : Facelift Insignia/Corsa D

    Trim : LE/VXR

    Engine : 2.0 cdti/1.6 Turbo

    Year : 13/07

    Default

What make would you recommend ? Bosch or genuine VX

What sort of price am i looking at paying for a full set of good quality plugs ? About 40 quid

Do you need a special tool to take them out ? The most special tool is your hands, be careful removing the leads from them as the clips are delicate. Just a deep socket for the plugs themselves

Would you recommend them to be fitted by dealers or DIY ? How confident are you? If you snap one its a head off job to fix. I recommend starting the engine to heat it up a fair bit first and use a drop of coppaslip on the threads of the new plugs.

    Most of all BE GENTLE!

AWW cheers John you have come to my rescue once again,

the reason i suspect the plugs is because /Saturday night i did about 35 miles in my car it ran brilliantly. Today i went to start the car outside temp 12.5 and the damn thing struggled to start and when it did i got white-ish blue smoke coming out of the back on start up.

If not plugs...... injector seals maybe ?

    Regards,

    Steve.

Or it may be the leak off pipes mate, there will be a how2 going up for this shortly. Try the plugs first as it won't do any harm (assuming you get them all out lol)

If one or more of the glowplugs or the glowplug relay had failed, you'd have a warning light (car and spanner) on the dash. As John said, difficult starting is more likely to be caused by an air leak which causes the fuel to run back towards the tank so the pump has to draw it back through before the engine will start.

When is the car difficult to start? Is it all the time, or is it perhaps when it has been left for a long time, or perhaps when it has been parked with the front facing uphill?

You can help to prove the air leak theory by leaving the car parked with the nose pointing down (especially when the car will be left standing overnight or longer) and seeing if that helps - gravity helps stop the fuel running back towards the tank.

I did mine recently because of poor starting but it made no difference. Tools you will need are 1/4 drive, 10mm deep socket, 1/4 drive long extension bar, 1/4 drive knuckle joint and long nose pliers, I invested in the extra long type and it made the job fairly straightforward. As the man said, take you time and go easy. Mine were not difficult to come out.
