M6 Toll road

Late last night me and a mate drove in convoy from Coventry to Stoke-on-Trent, but got diverted off the M6 as it was shut between junctions 4 and 4a.

We had the option of the M6 toll, which the diversion seemed to be pointing us to, but seeing as I wasn't prepared to pay £8 (I was in a "commerical vehicle", a Transit!) we used the roadblock setting on the satnav and followed that until we picked up the M6 signs further north.

When it went really wrong was when we got to Tamworth, took a left turn for "M6(north)" and without warning we were on the ****** M6 toll road! No signs saying "toll road ahead" or anything.

I took the first turn off and ended up at the toll booth, where I was so p*ssed off that I refused to pay, instead getting issued with a payment notice and told to phone customer services.

Anyone else been in this ridiculous situation? I'm furious with the lack of diversion signs in the first place when they'd closed one of the countries most used motorways, but how the hell is it that they can charge me for using the toll road, when there was no warning that I was entering it? Any advice for me?

I've used it a couple of times at rush hour when the traffic has been insane, but it was 2am so there was no way I was going to be ripped off, but the ****** signs are so misleading... B*stards...

i assume you are joking! either that or you will come upstuck soon. the m6 toll is policed regularly - normally by unmarked cars. seen people pulled over a few times. everyone thinks it is a private road so it can't be policed but that isn't true.

be warned fella, there is increasingly more police pressence on there nowadays i live near this road and im forever seeing cars in the hard shoulder been pulled.
Black BMW, Silver Focus ST and Dark Blue Volvo, dont know the reg numbers but they are very present now. Next door neighbours son's a police officer and he patroled it for two years, before going onto armed reaponse. He reckoned because the twoc'ers and robbery gangs use it so they dont get caught in traffic jams.
