Never liked the boot carriers. Issues with visibility, covering lights and numberplates etc etc so I went for the roof mounted ones.

Keeps access to the boot clear and no problems with paintwork getting rubbed by the straps.

Couple of Thule bars and Thule locking cycle carriers and they are pretty stable.

I'm considering a Thule euroway, fits on a towbar if you have one.
Not cheap but very good what I've seen.

Had a rear carrier, after it scratched the paint on previous car and more importantly my very expensive giant mtb, it got binned, Looking at roof rack and fixings now.

    Vehicle : Jaguar XF 3.0D V6

    Trim : Black

    Engine : 3.0D V6

My bike carrier simply clamps around the ball of the towbar and takes about 15 seconds to fit and is suitable for 2 adult bikes.

As I have never needed to tow and carry bikes at the same time, it doesn't matter that it uses the ball to 'hitch' to.

Take a wheel off and lob it in the boot... Sorted!

I thought about a bike carrier, but leaving £1200 worth of bike on the back of your car is one great way to get followed home by some bike stealing scum ball.

Sorry for the late reply/dragging this post up,

But thought I would put my 2p’s worth in incase it helps,

I did have two “thule 591” roof mount cycle carriers on thule roofbars which I have to say I was very impressed with, I now have the below “thule 9502”, also made by thule, and costing a good bit less than £200 including the cost of the towbar im very happy with it, also tilts so you can still get into you boot if you need to,

You can also get a three bike version “thule 9503”
