Both engines are good and have been around for a while now. The 330i does use a bit of oil, they all seem too. The 330d has a habit of digesting swirl flaps but bmw make a blanking plate to remove them iirc.

The SMG is a fun box but very expensive if its been treated badly or just not looked after.

The 330 has SSG as an option which has a bad reputation, I beleive the software was done by Magnetti Marelli who also did Alfa`s ****e selespeed. SMG is found on the M cars.

If it has to be an auto I`d go for a 330d which is a fabulous engine providing you remove the swirl flaps. Alternatively the 330i is available with a full auto box like the d but it`s such a sweet engine I think the auto box dulls it too much IMO (the d is much better suited to the auto as it avoids constantly having to change gears and the clutch is quite heavy).
