    Rightyo..

The e-bay listing say's it connects to the low pressure side of the system..

What you are looking for is Two rubber and aluminium lines rising on the airbox side of the car's underbonnet..these will have two black plastic capped valves on them..the low pressure line is the bigger of the two pipes ( in diameter)..

attach the valve from that can ( tightly) to the bigger line's valve and fill till the guage say's it's had enough.. disconnect and replace cap..run A/c system to check for operation..

BEWARE.. the gas used in ac systems can cause nasty freeze burns to the skin so take proper care when doing the above..

A/C systems shouldn't loose gas... if it's low there is a leak..get it to a proper A/C engineer who will have the proper leak detection equipment..

A top hint to anyone who has A/C is to run it for 15 mins a week, even in deep winter, to keep the oil seals in the compressor lubricated..without it they dry out and the gas will escape..

a local garage to me is advertising a/c regasing for £50, there is probably some extra hidden charges somewhere, but on the surface it seems a better option than the ebay item, especially when you include postage and agro of doing it yourself.

I tend to steer clear of anything that NASA supposedly endorsed.

To be honest you should have an air con specialist do it.

Reason is, you don't know how much gas is in there at the moment.

We do this at work but we charge £95 plus VAT. Other places tend to be around £50 as mentioned.

We vac out the remaining gas if there is any, and we have to weigh how much gas we put back in, according to the spec given on a sticker under the bonnet, or our reference book.

The gas contains a lubricant which lubricates the seals as it passes. If these seals are allowed to harden, its not unknown for them to allow gas to pass through them and out of the system. This is why you should run your a/c regularly even during winter months, to make sure the seals are lubricated, the clutch on the compressor doesn't sieze and to generally keep the system in good condition.

These home kits are good in principal but i'd love to know how you get on with it

That's the bit that has put me off doing a DIY job.

My wife's Corsa's AC isn't working (it was only checked and filled last year!) and I think it's lost it's coolant again - probably as she hasn't used it enough over winter. I looked at TIS earlier today when I saw this thread and they (Vx) use a service station thing that removes the old stuff and puts in the right amount. And, as you say, that's the problem - you don't know how much is still in the system. On my wife's car, the compressor isn't even kicking in, but that's probably because the pressure has fallen below a certain level and so the system won't even bother to try and start it - but there could well be a good amount of refrigerant in there. Without knowing for sure that it's empty, I wouldn't know if I was putting in too much - even though I know how many grammes it needs put in from empty.
