Default 3.2V6 what to look for when buying???

    Hi peeps

Just a quick one here, I currently own an Audi S4 2.7 Twin turbo and I am looking to change it, I tested a 55 plate Veccy estate 3.2 V6 Auto yesterday and must say I was very pleased with it, overall I thought it was very comfortable and easy to drive, nice and quiet and also has a bit of grunt if needed, so I think this is waht I will be looking to buy.

What sort of things should I be aware of if anything with these cars, anything to look for i.e. common problem areas etc????

    Scott

Only common problem I'm aware of amongst us 3.2 owners is the petrol warning light coming on, on a regular basis!!

But if you own an S4, you should used to this anyway!

Ha, ha! That makes the GSi's look economical!

No GSi specific problems that I know of/ have had so just check the usual - servicing etc.

Would just be aware of the mayo under oil filler cap thing. It's very likely you will find some and it's probably NOT head gasket, just condensation cause by the filler neck.

There are some issues specific to the 3.2 - look out for any oil leaks, they could be caused by the rocker cover gaskets leaking, which in turn is caused by the oil breathers being blocked. Don't buy a car that has missed an oil change - frequent oil changes keeps the breathers in better condition.

With the automatic there's another specific issue to be wary of - the oil cooler for the gearbox is connected to the radiator, and coolant and gearbox oil can mix, leading to the gearbox needing to be replaced. This is one example:

My 3.2 gets this, especially during the winter months, clears at the days get warmer.

My old 3.0v6 omega used to do the same too, first time I saw it I thought it was on the way out!

I forgot to mention - its better if you find an example where the timing belt has been changed recently and so won't need to be done again for a while, as it's not the easiest belt to change. You need to be fairly handy with the spanners to tackle it yourself, and you'd need the cam locking kit specific to the GM V6 family to do it. Unlike many other engines, you can't lock the cams with bits of wood or cable ties or other such stuff.

Don't be put off by a couple of horror stories though m8, generally the 3.2 is bomb proof, and in performance terms although not as quick as the S4 it will get you fairly quickly to 150(like you'll ever need to though) if your not bothered about age go for a 2003 version, after 2003 Vauxhall started removing all the toys and before 2003 the first ones had smaller brakes(2002 models had 302mm discs and 2003 models onwards had 314mm).

Generally the most annoying thing about the gsi is the suspension creak some suffer from, but it is easily cured.
