One week with EGR blanked on 1.9 CDTI so far so good.

Well, it's been a week and about 400 miles since I blanked off my EGR totaly on my 1.9 (150).

OK I have a P0400 fault and the EML is on but the car drives perfectly, actually better than standard.

OK I have a BSR remap and a stainless exhaust with the 2nd CAT removed and with the EGR blanked, the turbo starts to provide boost from as low as 1100 rpm and the car certainly has a lot more low rev grunt.

I've had my Autel MS509 on it monitoring the absolute manifold pressure and it never drops below atmosphere and starts to increase from about 1100 rpm and I run out of scale at 258kP Thats about 1.5 bar of boost pressure.

So if you don't mind a small engine symbol showing on the bottom right of your dash, it's worth a go for no crud into the engine and better turbo spool up and better performance below 2000 rpm, above that the EGR is closed anyway so it wont make any difference.

Fuel economy is slightly better and the engine runs cooler at light loads.

I'll try and get some pics this weekend, but basically, I cut a bit of stainless plate 40mm wide and left it 80mm long while trying this out, but 40mm square or round will do.

Remove the egr and with a bit of easy gasket, bolt the plate between the bottom (inlet) of the egr and the pipe going to the exhaust. You want this plate to be fairly thin.

Then bolt the egr back onto the inlet manifold, you may want to put a little gasket sealant or a new gasket on.

When you start the car, you will get the spanner light come on, this may come on and off as you drive the car but will become the EML when you next restart the car.

But the car is not in anyway hindered by this, no limp home mode or anything amis that I can see, diagnose etc.

Code reader shows p0400 EGR gas flow and nothing else.

So I'm going to leave it for now.

There must be a way on Tech2 to turn the EGR function off, it must be worth £50 at a dealer and a blanking gasket to get this done, surely..?

(....and I'm not calling anyone Shirley!!!).

In the past people used to used the metal from a coke can to make the blanking plate from.

Plasma will know if it can be Tech 2'd to ignore it. I remember hearing that he can't do it with the system. It would need to be done when getting a remap.

I think it must be possible since I remember reading on here that people had the EGR disabled by the dealers due to a shortage of EGR's.

If you unplug it the car will throw a wobbly - Yes I think Chocki has blanked it off via the bottom connector - the alternative is to use the modified Fiat gasket to partially block it off at the inlet manifold - this seems to be more successful, mine has been running for 2 weeks without complaint although I still wouldn't mind blocking it off altogether if a way can be found to turn off the EGR

Regal`s remap removes the EGR, so it must be possible.
