    Default Engine/Emissions warning light

Apologies if this has been covered before!

The engine warning/emissions light has reared it's ugly head on my 56 plate Vectra today. The car is running perfectly, no loss of power at all, no black smoke and drives as normal. There is plenty of power through the rev range too. It hasn't been for a long run recently due to the weather/work etc. Could this be the reason?

I have called into the dealers to get advice, and they have said if it runs ok, it's ok to use. Any problems and call back in.

Being as it's running just fine is there a way to reset the light to see if it comes back on again?

    Cheers

Cheers Chris. I thought that may be the case, I'm just being a tight arse as usual! I'll monitor it over the next week or so until I can get it booked in for checking,

You might be able to get rid of it by disconnecting the battery for 30mins or so.

    So, have both the engine warning & emmission lights come on;

or is it just the engine electronics fault light? (pic of car/spanner)

or the emmissions light? (pic of engine)

Sorry it's just the pic of an engine (Orange) I wasn't really sure what it was hence why I said engine/emissions.

Well, the light is still burning away in my dash. However the car runs a LOT better since it's been on! By running better I mean it pulls like the proverbial train. So, whatever it is that's gone has made a huge improvement to the power of the engine. It always felt a little flat before until the turbo kicked in, not anymore!

I really should get it done asap though.....

Best thing is to get a code reader, apparently argos sell one for 40 something pounds, it'll cost you twice this much to go to a dealer!.

I'ts something that will most likely save you a lot more than the cost of the reader in the long run as it will work on many cars and lets face it, ALL new cars so will last you a long time indeed.

Code readers used to be out of reach of most people, but these days with more and more reliance on electronics in cars, they are very necessary.

With the code and this forum, I'm sure the reader would probably pay for itself the first time you used it and it's not as if it's never going to be used again since it will work on this car and unless you buy an older car, it will work on your next car as well....

Hope I've convinced you to buy a code reader...

BTW, apparently there is a way on Vec's to read the code without needing a code reader.

    Yay!, it's gone up!!! £70

At this price you can get an Autel Maxiscan 509 which gives you a lot more diagnostic information, available from E-Bay.

Sorry for misleading you on price, there are cheaper code readers like this one:

Thanks for that Chocki. I have considered a code reader purchase. I just haven't got around to it. Even the £70 is cheap though considering the use it could end up getting?

As I have mentioned though, the car is running brilliantly, better than ever before in fact...so whatever caused the light to show in the first place, and is now not working is restricting the engine power? Who knows...

I'll look into a code reader, and thanks for the advice.
