Default Heres another one for the astra haters

Ive got a track car.....Picking it up tonight, a phase 2 astra Gsi... Found it local on ebay so emailed the guy. The advert mentioned a few bits and pieces wrong and that a bit of money would make it mint. Well as I often see these at club rally days etc I thought they cant be too bad as a fun car/occasional track car and as ive known Vauxhalls all my life its something I can fix myself. Went to see it and I could see it gleaming as I drove down the road. As I got out of the car the guy was waiting there at his gate….”I go on vectra –c too”….really? who are you? ….”im mark2.2sri with all the astras’… we both then had one of those… I cant believe it moments/small world type thing.

Chatting about the car I found mark one of the most honest and perfectionist people ive met. He was pointing out faults to me that I had not seen. He only bought the car the day before, fro the seller on migweb, drove it back from Norwich only to find his GF doesn’t like it and wants something less powerful (shes just passed her test). Plus mark admitted it felt to ‘old skool’ for him and he prefers the more modern mk4+ astras. Fair enough

So here it is…I paid Marks asking price because it was so clean and I don’t think im going to get any nasty suprises. It needs a good going over with the detailing gear and my smartool as some of the paint has started on a pinkwards slope but nothing that cant be solved easily over a weekend. A simple look at the engine bay had me convinced that a good scrub with wheel brightneter/APC and a bit of dressing will have it like showroom under there.

I think a set of track alloys/tyres will be a good addition and I’ll be scouring the trade stands at billing with a bit more interest now !

You gonna keep it road legal mate?

If you want any help track prepping it gimme a shout. Done a few cars now so if you need any pointers lemme know.

Tip for you, don't get too attached to it paint wise, otherwise you will never give it rock all on track. Keep it clean and tidy etc but don't get too attached. Bloomin gravel pits

Like it and good choice too

P.S. Can I help make it a track car? Please please please please

Its going to be primarily a second car for us both to use, but it was also bought with the intention of attending some track days. I’d like to get it as nice as possible without spending masses of money on it. I’ll keep it standard as much as possible and as its on her insurance (o ncb) the mods will be very limited. Trackwise, croft sounds ok, but I think at first I want to go where my mate takes his chevette HS. They hold events at elvington airfield nr york run by Javelin track days, full day for £98, open pit lane, plenty of run off and they let you go a bit daft within reason (ie, hes compeletly sideways 99% of the time). Once ive got used to it, I’ll progress to places with barriers and gravel pits lol

Looking good Andy and let the fun start, lol.
Me and a couple of mates used to have a red Manta for a track car which we used to take up to Knockhill and have a laugh with it.

Got to say Andy that is far to good to use as a track day car m8 if its half as good as the piccy's i would be tempted to completely mint and keep it as standard they are getting rare now especially the ECOTEC GSI's !!!!

    Back in a V6 !!!!!!!!!!!! And lovin it !!!

The phase two Astra GSi is an Astra Sport with GSi bodykit and Bilstien dampers. But unfortunatly they are the budget bilstiens and not much better than standard.

    But..........................

When I had my Astra 2.0 Sport, I knew the 2.0 Ecotec wasa capable engine but would cost loads to get serious power out of it and got annoyed that it could not outhandle my mates Peugeot GTi-6.

So, I put in a pair of Courtenay cams, re-map, 4 branch manifold and Jetex Exhaust system with no cat and finally a lightened and balanced flywheel.

This gave it a comfortable 155bhp (Standard is 136bhp) but it revved just like a red top. But the best bit was the chassis.

I fitted the proper Yellow top spec Bilstein dampers, Eibach springs, Eibach Anti-Roll bar kit, poly bushes, 17" wheels with the correct 49mm offset with 205 40 17" tyres.

The end result was interesting, pretty quick for a 2.0 Ecotec, but not the fastest car on the road by far, but the handling was out of this world, round silverstone although not as quick as the GTi-6, was still quicker over a lap as the pug could not keep up on the bends!!! Loved it!!
