Default 2.2 cam chain death rattle

My engine almost met its maker last night. For a long long time now I had been getting an occasional rattle on start up but cleared as soon as you revved the engine. Typically it never did it at the garage, or while still in warranty - although one of the guys from the service desk heard it one evening when I picked it up after all the mechanics had gone home.

It's on file that I've previously reported a rattle and was due to go in on Thursday for yet another check as the rattle has started to happen more often than before. It tends to happen after using the car again when it has been stood for an hour or two. As said though, the rattle would go as soon as you revved the engine, but not last night. It sounded like a bag of bolts in a washing machine.

Took down the Vx garage this morning for them to have a listen and was told to turn the engine off immediately and not to drive it. Left the car there and they gave me a lift back home. Their initial thoughts are a sticky chain tensioner but won't know more until they take the rocker cover off.

Engine has done 49,000 miles and is 8 months out of manufacturers warranty. (July 2009)

Do you think I stand a cat in hells chance of Vauxhall coughing up for some of the repair costs? Car has a full Vx service history and the rattle was there while still in warranty.

I reckon you should get some sort of contribution from vauxhall, if they are a nice enough dealer they should look into for you.

In all fairness, it is a valid question.

It's the Z22YH direct injection petrol engine.

I'm just wondering if they'll argue that cam chain problems only happened with the Z22SE engine and only within a certain engine number or chassis number range - as per the Field Reports.

The SE's fault is not with the chain or tensioner it was with an oil jet that was too small, this was sorted on the Vec B in 02 and all Vec C's should not have that problem. If its the tensioner then there both the same on the SE and YH. It uses oil pressure to work. However if you get a chain kit fitted now I believe it now has a different tensioner, it uses the same one as the NET, its a straight swap and they use a spring rather than oil pressure. I take it you've been using proper VX oil filters, as none VX ones can break down and clog the oil galleries.

Can you describe the rattle on start up? I thought mine was making bit of a noise on the 1st tick over then stopped once it had turned on. It was more of a clunk or something, i checked the oil and its just below the half mark so was goin to get some more to pop in. Im a little worried now after reading this

same thing happened me with similar mileage, one year out of warranty. For a few weeks i heard a noise like a very slight whirrr on start up, thought it was down to noisey tappets or something.

A few weeks later my chain slipped a few teeth which my local dealer repaired at full cost to myself, good luck mate.

Well it's got a full Vx service history. 5w/30 long life fully synth used. One would hope they used genuine parts.

Interestingly though I first heard the noise not long after the 2nd service when the car had done approx 31,000 miles. IIRC they used an engine flush. Could that have dislodged something and partially clogged the tensioner?
