Unhappy Vec B - Steering rack

The wife was driving her Vec B and then the steering became very hard. I've just had a qick check and it looks as though the gaiter has blown a hole and thus deposited the fluid everywhere

    Is this common ?

    Model - 2.0DTi on a '51 plate with 73K

Taking it in tomorrow to see what the real (£) damage is

Steering rack gaiter shouldn't be too dear, i'd say an hours labour.

Are you taking it to Evans Halshaw?

gaiter won't be dear.. about £15.00 plus , as steve say's about an hour to fit..

is it common...No is the short answer.. not in my experience.. i think it's more like ' one of those things'..

if you were feeling brave you could change it yourself..

The car is ex BT (my old car) and it's still under warranty (?) so it will be going to the BT flreet workshop in Watford (where it was serviced - whilst a Co. Car).

I managed to get home early to give it wash (turtle wax) then quick go with Megs Cleaner Wax followed by Megs Gold Class Liquid Wax.

I was impressed how easy Megs is to use

I love that colour, my old veccy b was that colour. Had a steering rack go on me on that one. Hope you get your gaiter fixed relatively cheaply.

Thanks - I've just noticed how the 'no cycling' sign reflects in the bonnet

I liked the colour too, but after having it for 4 years I needed a change, the ife likes it

If the gaiter has split, it will normally be because the rack is leaking, the fluid builds up in the gaiter until it splits, I had one leaking a few yrs ago, temp fix was to clean the gaiter out (obviously you cant do that) and top up the fluid, got it through an MOT anyway, brace yourself for a new rack though, sounds like root cause to me.

Possible that the rack could have a leaking seal now you mention it.

You could get the rack overhauled, i know a good little business that can turn a rack round in 24 hours for a good price

Sounds like a new rack. The gaiter only stops crud from entering the rack. If fluid is leaking out, the seals have gone

The car is now sitting at the BT Fleet workshop awaiting an inspection and report to go back to Lumley's the Warranty people.

The Workshop manager was very confident that a "New Rack" will be supplied and fitted FOC

It's just fitting it in to their very full schedule, though the small print does allow for a hire car whilst the other is in being sorted (max 7 days).

    Thanks for the replies.

S73VE B - Why did you mention Evans Halshaw ? do they do deals ? I like the Monaro VXR in black they have there.
