Mine was making the clicking noise then eventually jsut came off. I'm going to use it as an excuse to get an XP2 knob sometime in the future, even though it's 200 squid...

Heat it up with a heat gun, be careful not to get too close and burn it, then use a rag so you dont burn your hands and twist it off, thats how i got mine off, hope this helps/works.

mine had exactly the same problem, took it to main dealers as my partner was learning to drive in the car and didnt want it comming off when she was driving, and the answer i got was either pay £200+ for a new gear stick or wrap sone insulating tape around the stick and force the gear knob back on (dealers said this is what they have ben doing to cars comming back under warranty)

Just to add my two pence worth as Ive stumbled on this thread

I did the same start as another member and from the bottom of the plastic/chrome cover levered it up and it should pop up and pull out (carefully so as not to chip the finish. This leaves the metal body of the gearknob exposed.

I then used a drill to pop a hole through the top of the gearknob under where it will be hidden by the plastic cover and you can easily feel when it breaks through and hits the top of the gear stick. A tap twisted though this will lift the knob off with no fuss nice and gently with no stress to the gear stick or risk of scratching and bashing trim panels as the ' bash it with a big hammer ' method risks

This allows you to have a good look at the splines on the stick and inside the knob , replace it or it skip the drill and tap and use the exposed top to tap the knob on tighter if its coming loose/rattling.

Whe you say "pop a hole through the top of the gearknob under where it will be hidden by the plastic" I take it you mean drill into the alloy centre piece (and not the white plastic surround), so you would need a drill bit of say 8mm dia?

Just needs a tap up... you are lucky! Mine flew off when racing away from the lights! Changed into 2nd and the gearknob flew off and into the back! Poor design

Yeah buddy right in the centre through the exposed alloy and it will let the tap wind through and push on the top of the gearstick lifting off the knob.

Just the way I did it hope it helps some people (who have access to a tap and die set )
