Default How long/much to change ribbed belt?

Good evening my fellow Vecta(ers) and may I say first of all what a pleasure it is do join you on this forum... ok, to the point!

Had my car serviced today (Vectra 1.9 CDTI 16v) 81K.

When I had my car returned, they hadn't reset the INSP notification, but more importantly they didn't change the V belt that they're supposed to at 80K so I phoned them up and have booked it in again for next week. What a pain.

Anyway, the place I took it to (VX independent) charge £72 per hour plus VAT. Does anyone have an idea how long it would take the garage to change this and what sort of rates are you getting on your services? I live in Berkshire so quite a pricey place.

I paid £170 today just to have the oil changed from the look of the worksheet + £1.07 for 100mls washer fluid. I knew they'd try and get me on that so I filled up this morning before they took it, but they managed to squeeze just that little bit more in. At £1.07 for 100mls, that's £53.50 for 5 litres. 10 times the price of Halfords. Anyway, would love to know what people think. If they're quite dear, I'll try and find somewhere else next week.

Thought they were supposed to check my valve clearance as well, but no sign they've done that either. Monkeys...

Last year I paid £320 for the service, new brake fluid, fuel filter, pollen filter, air cleaner element and key battery. They tried to get me on brake pads all round, but luckily I had 1 week's worth of Network Q warranty left and they were all changed under warranty. Sweet. Anyway, enough of this essay. Love to hear from you.

    Ta ta bye bye.

There are some terrific 'how to' documents on here. They can save you plenty of cash and may even be quicker than taking it to the garage, also not having the car for the day can be a pain. There are also some very knowledgable folks here too.

I wouldn't take my car to the garage for anything that I can do myself, as it just increases the cost of ownership and my car is a 'tool for the job' - ie commuting 70 miles each way to work and back - the car is just transport to me, other people see them differently, but each to their own.

    Welcome.

Ah thanks for that. Looks quite simple. I'm getting a £40 discount from the garage so if it's a quick job then I might as well let them do it, although I had one garage once tell me something was a 10 minute job and then charged me for an hour and a half... Maybe I'll do it at the weekend...

It does seem a bit stupid to change it when it needs removing to do the cambelt, which will need replacing in 9 months time. Surely the worst that can happen is that it snaps and then I get towed home and do it if it happens?

What do you reckon? In the past I've noticed that belts often look in pretty good nick once they've been removed.

To put this into context. My 1.8 is a 04 year and has done 136,000 miles on the original auxilliary belt. As it only powers the alternator and A/C on mine, if it snaps it is not too catastrophic.

Does the CDTi aux belt also operate the water pump?

In a word, no. Alternator and aircon I believe. Powersteering is electrohydrolic. Timing belt drives the water pump.

Went back to the dealer again last week and apparently VX changed the interval period so that fan belts now need changing every 100K miles same as the cambelt. Didn't need the valve clearance checking as 16v so doesn't need it apparently.

Still at least that saved me some money! :-)
