    Default gearbox drain plug magnet

well just changed oil in my f40 gearbox, put the 2.4 litres in thats recomended on ere, gear changing is much sweeter.just a question for someone, should the bottom drain plug hold a magnet to catch the metal fragments,my bottom drain plug was a solid plug but my top refill one had a recess which could hold a magnet, from past experiance ive always seen a magnet on the bottom drain plug but nothing present on mine, anyone shed any light on this cheers

Every gearbox should have a magnet somewhere to collect all the metal debris that occurs. This is normal as the gears bed in together. Whether the magnet is in the drain plug or captive somewhere else in the gearbox doesn't really matter that much. Yes you can clean one in the drain plug, but captive ones are usually larger as they are fit for life. They are normally located in a place where oil flow velocity is relatively low to reduce 'swarf loss' from the magnet.

cheer for the reply, the oil i took out didnt have any metal fragments in so u must be correct in that its somewhere else in the gearbox, must say the oil change i did made a hell of a difference,i also added a bottle of prolong gearbox treatment and the change from first to second when cold now is very smooth, anyone with the dreaded crunch from first to second should def try reducing oil.
