Beware!! Scam.

HSBC /Internet banking-e-mail scam!!! as aforementioned there is a REAL scam as my son had £140 taken from his account via just clicking on an e-mail supposedly from HSBC, he uses online banking and he received an e-mail from hsbc, like a **** he clicked to open and two days later gets info from the bank saying this was thought suspicious and was looked into by the bank, he's had his money returned luckily but now has the hassle of sorting everything out as the account had to be froze for security sake, BEWARE!!

They couldn't get your account details just by clicking on the link - that makes no sense at all...

Nope, you would have to had logged in with your details on the fake website.

Never visit bank sites via links, always go direct from your browser, and for goodness sake dont use IE

ITS HAPPENED!!! my son just opened the e-mail and looked at it, (sunday), today he received a first class letter saying he must go to his bank urgently has they had picked up this potential scam, after much wrangling he has had his money returned, but it had been taken via this e-mail he received!

I also recieve these scam emails (HSBC) reguarly about my account be froze or the like etc etc. I did click it out of curiousity knowing that it was fake and that i do not have HSBC so nothing to worry about. Must admit the page looks good and straight away asks you to login bla bla. But you've only gotta to look at the top address bar. And as said NO ONE should ever log in from an email link just asking for trouble banks never contact you in that way of confirmation.

In theory clicking on the link could trigger a download of an executable file that scours your PC looking for passwords, although really you should have suitable firewall and security software that stops the download or asks if you want it to be allowed to run.

He must have disclosed his details somehow, or they were stored/read from his system somehow, even keyloggers take some time before they become of any value to the scammers.... hmmm. wierd.

A lot of banks including RBS now use a separate card reader device they send out to online customers, like a small calculator, with a slot for sliding in your debit card, that requires your pin, it also requires a number which is presented online at each transaction which you put into your card reader and the resulting number it generates has to be entered everytime before any transfers of cash can be made.
So, these days with many banks, even if they get access to your account they cannot transfer any cash from it.

funny you should say this i got a call from loyds tsb on my land line saying they want to talk about my account this was at 7ish at nite i said send it in writing was a bit weary

i get emails from a few banks about my account. i dont have an account with them so i click the link and fill it in with ridiculous details. Donald Duck and followed by some choice expletives etc. some will direct you to the 'official' bank webpage but go via another site and they get your details by watching the page
