Default Oil Change - What Oil???

    Alright people,

What can I treat my 1.9 CDTi to when I get an oil change?

Its running a DTUK box and I want some really good stuff for the engine.

Been advised by vauxhall to use 5w-30 Shell Helix oil which they are offering at 10.99 per litre.

Any suggestions to better ones or is this good enough to do the job?

Can you get better oil though which is better for the car?

I understand recommended is a good one, however vauxhall would say that as it's their own too!

    Was thinking a magnatec maybe?

I just got myself some Fuchs Titan Supersyn EcoFlex 5W30 oil and a filter from Opie Oils for an extremely good price. They supply six litres, which is enough for the engine plus some for top ups. Mention that you are a member of this forum/club.

It may be worth you looking them up.

(No, I do not have shares in Opie Oils... )

Providing you are using the MINIMUM specification, then it doesn't matter what it is branded or called

VX prefer that you use specification GM-LL
Some people don't like this as it is a really thin oil, but it is designed to increase fuel economy at the cost possibly of increased wear

If your car is out of warranty then any synthetic oil will do, such as 0W40, 5W40, 5W30, 10W40
However, don't go lower than 10W40

In my last Vectra B I used Shell 5W40 synthetic at every service (I supplied it to the dealership) but I was getting it for £10 per 5 litres

Personally, I am quite happy to continue using the VX GM-LL oil
It is pretty much the same price as anything else available (£40 for 8 litres)

I would suggest that anyone using a box or remap should change the oil twice as often and consider using a '40' or even a '50' oil, rather than the normal '30'. The thicker oil will protect your engine better if you habitually give it some 'stick', with a slight increase in fuel consumption being the only drawback.

I'm still scared of using Mobil 1 5w50 as it doesn't meet GM specs. Going to Germany in April and I really don't want to see the old girl die.

If it's good enough for M5 BMWs then it ought to be good enough for your Vectra.

I recommend Mobil1 0w-40 turbodiesel fully synthetic changed every 10k miles.

My car is on 80k running this oil since the first oil change at 10k miles, no detrimental effect on the engine which is remapped (BSR), de-catted and gets punished across Germany.

Basically, this is so thin that if your engine holds it in, then it's a good engine yet it will also take a fair load at temperature.

The only issues I heard are if you have a DPF as some additives may cause a problem with this, but I don't believe the 1.9's have this fitted, mine certainly doesn't.

That's what I'm trying to avoid. The 3.0CDTi runs temperatures higher than 140°C when abused across the German motorways.
