Mine seems prone to this on moving off even on dry roads. I don't have to give it a lot of stick for it to do it. Is it common?

Only if you've got cheap tyres mate. The engine doesn't give out anywhere near enough torque to be able to do it, so that's the only thing it can be...
Depends what you're used to as well I suppose - that was the only petrol I've driven in 5 years as I love the mixture of economy and torque, although the lack of revs can be a bit annoying sometimes...
Oddly enough I drove my dad's S40 1.8 petrol the other day and tried reversing it up the driveway - stalled it at least once as I'm not used to revving a car to get it up a hill...
