Default P0420 Code on Fiesta 1.25 Mk4.5 Facelift - HELP

    Hi chap's,

My Fiesta's EML came on so I have had the Green Flag folks out and they have plugged in the Diag's tester and its come up with P0420.

Bloke reckons it points to the CAT as it says something like "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold".

Does this mean my CAT is scrooged?

    HELP PLEASE FOLKS.

    Thanks.

Oh, and the car is a Mk4.5 Facelift 1.25 Freestyle 02-reg with the Zetech 16v Engine.

The code has been reset yesterday and hasnt returned yet, but I want to completely go. I checked on ebay and there some Cata-Clean type things, would you use it?

    please.!

    Thanks.

Could be any one of the following...

The cat is cracked / clogged.
    The O2 sensor is failing.
    There is an exhaust leak.

    Below pinched from here

Pity you didn't read some previous posts on this subject as you could have saved yourself some money

You need a basic understanding of engine management not just a code reader. Code P0420 indicates the cat efficiency below threshold.

The first check is to make sure the second oxygen sensor is giving a steady reading around the mid value, say 0.5v. If this sensor is giving a fluctuating reading, i.e. switching between 0.1 and 0.8v then this proves the cat has failed.

The first sensor should always switch when in closed loop but will remain steady on over-run as it goes to open loop, usually at about 0.1v for a second or two.

The cat has probably been damaged when the car has suffered from a misfire previously as the coil will have failed at some point.

What is your normal duty cycle with this car? It may be that a good hot run will clean off any deposits that may mask the operation of the cat and thus reduce performance.

Usual run with this car is Mon-Fri work in the morning and home in the evening.
About a 10-20 mile usage at the weekend.

Before the light came on, I actually took it for a drive approx 60 mile round trip on Motorway, full load, Me, Misses, Little lad in his car seat and 4 Wheels.

Coped fine, then got home and parked it up. When the car was used again about an hour later, within a mile the EML came on.

Noticed a very slight "held back" feel to it when driving, but nothing of any real concern to to take note about.
