Think you have to switch on the rear demister for these to work

As above. They are not really to heat the water so that you get warm water coming out, but merely to prevent freezing of water in the jet itself which would stop them working.

Does it work? Aren't the pipes just as likely to freeze?

the jets are more likely to freeze before the pipes.

but it also depends on your screenwash..

Definately not the case on my 02 GSi. Otherwise, if you were on the motorway at say -5 degC with the all the windows clear cos the a/c is on, why would you have to put the rear screen heater on just to get heated washers?

Does A/C activate at that temp? And the heated front jets ARE powered when heated rear screen is on.

Just put a meter across the two wires on my jets with the engine running, no rear demist. Result = 12.9 volts across the wires.

Why wouldn't the a/c work at - degC. Off topic, but can you explain?

I thought it didn't work when low ambient temp. The air would be so dry anyway, that I doubt there would be much benefit anyway.

My compressor churns away on very cold mornings when the temp dial is set to 28 degC. The a/c still works as it's conditioning the air and as far afaik, a/c works over the whole temp range, ie. 16 to 28 (or "max") degC.
