They're really hammering Toyota..... Saw the American woman on TV last night saying her throttle jammed, she tried every gear including reverse but the car just kept on accelerating!

You can't tell me any courtroom judge is stupid enough to believe that!

You put a car into reverse at speed and your going to leave the gearbox in the road behind you!

It's clearly about suing Toyota until they go under.

I wouldn't have thought that an auto box would select reverse when the car is going forwards, irrespective of selector position.

At least Toyota are doing something about it! Vauxhall would just deny all knowledge of a problem and then they would contribute towards repairs based on who they randomly think they should help!

Anyway haven't they just recalled the Antara or whatever it's called?

I'd still buy a Toyota for reliability and build quality, they lead the market by a long way (well did!)

I saw a article on the news regarding this and the guy from the AIM (Advanced institute of motorists) basically said that its down to people paniking when the throttle jammed, he said essentially you go into a blind panic. His advice was, remove the engine from the equation by selecting neutral this applies to both manual and auto, you should then gently start braking, if you slam your foot on the brakes you'll cook them and loose all braking. If that fails to work turn the ignition off, this is the last line as it is likely you'll loose power assisted brakes and power sterring if available however considering the options available if doing 100MPH unable to stop it is a good backup. They pointed out you should NOT try to release the accerator, this may lead to the trottle opening further.
    Most improtantly don't panic.

WE are talking about a load of Americans, all they see is the oppertunity to sue someone for money.......it's nothing more than a witch hunt for Toyota.

Anyone with any common sense would do just as mentioned above, hit netural or switch it off......but then that wouldn't get you any money...

I wouldn't select neutral, as that would cause engine damage as the revs flew upto the limiter and stayed there. I would turn the ignition off - you don't need power steering when doing 80mph and the brakes would still work for a few applications with assistance and after that would still work but would need extra pressure on them. By turning off the ignition you would still get engine braking effect too.

Brake lights would still work with ignition off.

Just to be clear OFF means to position 1 - so the steering lock won't engage either.

God bless America! (and their "were there's blame" culture) as above I would still have a Toyota in a blink.

if you're out of control doing 80mph, who cares about engine damage? hitting a wall at 80mph is going to do some engine damage!
