    Default Gear Change Problem

Hi im new to the forum but i have a problem on my vectra which is doing my head in!!! its really hard to find 2nd gear from 1st to 2nd and from 3rd to 2nd. it will find it but you have to be really gentle with the gears to get it in and then your still not guarenteed to get it in. Is it he box or something else? has anyone else had this problem? and if it is the box how much am i looking at for a replacement? thanks in advance.

I don't know which gearbox you have, but there's a known issue with the F40, which causes notchiness when going from 1st to 2nd when cold, and when the gearbox has warmed up the notchiness is apparent when going from 2nd to 3rd. Does this sound like your problem? Vauxhall's official fix is to drain the oil out of the gearbox (3.2 litres) and put in 2.4 litres. Later F40's already have 2.4 litres in them, and Vauxhall do state that if the lower level of oil doesn't fix it then there's nothing else they can do to fix it.

The 1.8 have the F17 box with either Wr or CR gearing, the F40 box is on the 1.9 oilers. First, have you checked you oil level via the filler level plug? Second when the box is cold I also have to be carefull when changing gear and I have found that by pauseing between coming out of first before going into second the problem almost goes. Hope this helps.

I have the same issue with the same gearbox. Carpets explanation of what to do when changing gears is how i get round it.

Unfortunatly the gearbox on ours is a sealed unit and has no filler level plug. Also, if you want to change the gearbox oil anyway which is what i intend to do, you have to remove the entire bottom plate from the gearbox and buy a new seal from VX

Mine is like that, on a 06 1.8 16v vvt but its alright if i'm gentle and when its warmed its fine. Had the oil drained but didn't solve anything, depends where you live as well as I could see this being extremely annoying around town and that if its first thing and cold.

Very common, especially with the 1.8. quite a few threads on here about them

i was told if u remove the reverse light switch with 13mm ring spanner you can fill oil up that way and undo the oil level plug and when oil start to drip out of the oil level plug the box is full of oil. Dont no how true this is
check it out c what u lot think
