Default Different oils - is there a quick guide?

Buying oil for the 1.4 Tigra is easy, but what about for the Vectra.

Was having a look at the different typed in Halfords because they have Mobil1 on offer. Something like £23 for 4.5L 5w-30 synthetic but it was on a shelf marked 'PETROL', which had another shelf beside it marked 'DIESEL' where they did not have the Mobil1 but had their own 5w-30 for near £50!

Is the 5w-30 for a petrol engine different than that for a diesel?

Not that it really matters because I will be getting the oil from the dealer but is there a difference between petrol engine oil and diesel engine oil?! Surely 5w-30 synthetic oil is the same no matter what the bottle says?

Generally 'diesel' oils have additives to help clean the engine.
Vx use the same oil in both petrol and diesel.
To meet the full Vx standard you need a 5W30 fully synthetic oil that meets GM-LL-A-025, GM-LL-B-025.
You will find a few 5W30 fully synthetic oils, some will be to Ford standard the others BMW, VW etc.
This just means that a sample of that oil has been sent to the car manufacturer and meets their specific requirements.

So it is recommended to buy one thats been analyzed by the manufacturer or one thats specific for a diesel?

Why can't oil just be oil?!

Just look up your model here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-861-car-engine-oils.aspx

You should find a selection of suitable oils.

I noted that Vauxhall has cut back to 12 month or 20,000 mile services on many of its current cars (recently looked through some of their brochures). Any particular reason for this?
