sorry but if you bought the diesel for "racing" you made one BIG mistake!!!!!!

diesel arent meant to be raced fast or anything there meant to get you from a to b minimal trouble but still have the grunt to over take at say 50 to 70

if you wanted a racer you should have bought a 2 litre turbo petrol or 3.2 v6 or even the 2.8t v6 not the cdti

i spent approximately 3 grand on my last diesel car which i took on the track plenty of times loads of power coming out the corners but petrols left me for dead on the long straights

if you wanted a fast racer should have stuck with a petrol simply diesels arent racer

To try to answer the question.

The only way in which you can answer this is to have a full load torque curve for your and to know the gear ratios.

From these 2 things you can decide where the torque out of gearbox (theoretical, ignoring transmission losses to make to easy) in the next gear up (at the new engine speed) is equal to that in the current gear. As the torque if you left it in that gear would begine to drop (at the top of the rev range) and the torque in the next gear up would either be climbing or at least level.

Generally for diesels this point is just before rated speed.

Here is a chart showing torque out of gears into final drive across the rev range for a 'modern diesel car' - I can't tell you where it is from....

    Gear ratios are

    Gear 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
    Ratio 3.5 2.7 1.8 1 0.87
