    Default Replacing CIM unit

I am going to replace the CIM unit in my V6 CDTI in the next day or two, have a Tech 2 session arranged for afterwards. Just could with some pointers on removal and fitting of the new unit, new unit has some instuctions printed on it something to do with rotating it clockwise then counter clockwise etc.

    Thanks.

The instructions are only applicable if you physically take the unit apart and remove the airbag ribbon etc. They tell you how many turns to make in order to leave the neutral setting in such a place that you can turn the steering wheel full distance either way without snapping it...

If you're simply replacing the whole CIM, bare in mind the immobiliser etc all works through it, so you'd have to do it at the dealers as you won't be able to drive it after till they've worked their magic on it.

Actually changing it is easy enough:

Remove airbag and steering wheel, remove steering cowl covers upper and lower, then you'll find one huge plug with all the electrical connections and a clamp holding it all on to the steering column at the back. Remove the bolts of the clamp and it should come straight off...

As with most things, if it isn't moving you've probably forgotten something...

    Hi folks,

Think me CIM needs to be replaced too !

    Cruise control not working
    Indicators not self cancel
Steering wheel warning light on with !
    ESP light on

    Good eh ?

Has anyone done any video of replacing one of these things ?

Would have a go myself then !

I've just seen a video on You Tube replacing a Veccy steering wheel. Shame he stopped at there.

Or does anyone know any decent Vauxhall Specialists in the South Wales area that could give me a quote for the job ?

Just a thought here folks but looking at how often these CIMs need replacing on these cars, has anyone ever thought of running this as a business ?

They could just travel around the UK replacing CIMs [new or even refurbished - yet another business opportunity, refubishing CIMs. Ha, just though of that one. I should be a millionaire with all these brilliant ideas]

Come to think of it, what do the dealers do with the old CIMs......... Mmmmmm, refurbish ? possibly not. Perhaps there are huge skips at the back of all the VX dealers throughout the UK full of broken CIMs ready and waiting for someone to buy them all up and start a refurb and replacement business.

I would be quite happy to pay someone to replace mine which is currently on the blink. Obviously they would need a Tech 2 to reset all the bits and bobs but got to be an idea !

And best of all cheaper than the dealer : - )

    Any takers ?

I could sort this but again, am too far away.

You might want to try re-calibrating the steering angle sensor (tech2 job) before replacing the CIM.

Thanks for your replies and will keep you in mind however some good news.

    All problems have dissappeared !

Cruise works again, indicators self cancelling, and no more strange lights showing up any more so roll on summer.

Electrics must have got damp over the winter [mind you I did have 2 feet of snow covering the car for 2 weeks in January] then must have dried out with this bit of warm weather we have just been having. Nice.

Will have to try to garage the car next winter : - )
