Make sure he does NOT go anywhere that does not have a petrol station within easy reach. Even driven "carefully" they are a bit on the thirsty side

    DIS unit distributor/coil pack

    Uneven idle

Rear bushes, push it into a roundabout, if it twitches, you know the bushes are on the way.

Water dripping from exhaust, potential head trouble, esp this time of yr.

Steering UJ, inside the car, you will feel uneven movement at the wheel if it has play.

Airbag and ABS lights, make sure they illuminate, otherwise its bulb failure of fault, anything more than a bulb is mega money.

any hint of exhaust noise in the enginebay.. the blow may range from a simple gasket (pence) to the common cracked manifold (£££)

    un-even rear tyre wear..

    clunky anti-roll bar links..

Dis pack failed on mine too. The rear arches rust quite badly, the timing belt needs to have been done no later than 80K intervals although they later changed it to 60K a year later. The gearbox can be a bit vague and if the airbag light is on all the time its because the seat belt tensioners have a dodgy connectors under the drivers seat. Common fault. Also the steering may ‘clunk’. Again a common fault casued by play in the knuckle joint at the base of the steering column. Not too bad on juice, mine was more economical on long runs than the 1.4 corsa sri I had before, due to the relaxed nature of the V6 cruiser. Unless its had its springs changed for later ‘lotus’ developed ones, 98 onwards, it will handle like a boat as they sit quite high for a sports model. Check for oil/water m ix too as it may not be the head gaskets, but could be the oil cooler which sits between the two heads and can leak sending oil into the waterways. That’s expensive to fix.

can only second the oil cooler. That blew on my v6 cav - result was rebuild engine cos the added pressure will blow the head gasket(s) and score the bores. ££££ (2k infact)
