    Default 3.0cdti starter fault

    Hi All

Can anyone help with a intermittant, I think starter fault about two or three time a month it appears to not engage an make the noise as if not engaging the ring gear I have had two garages look at it and it has not done it after starting it a lot of times, could it be a dirty shaft it is automatic so would not have any clutch dust,or could it be something to do with the ignition switch, any comments would be apreciated thank you.

If it is so intermittent and rare, leave until it becomes more permanent

A faulty starter motor is quite easy to diagnose as it normally won't engage at all but you can hear the starter motor firing

If the ignition switch was faulty then the starter motor won't be receiving electricity, however when faulty these usually fail completely and aren't intermittent

Personally it sounds like some loose wiring
Has the engine or gearbox been removed from the vehicle at any time?

Mine did it a couple of times, turned out to be in need of a new battery, sounds odd but true, if you take it to a decent garage they may have the correct meter to test it for you.
