    Default Previous body repairs...

Ive just been cleaning the car and have noticed some irregularities in the paintwork on the n/s/r 1/4 panel, rear bumper, and n/s/r door...Ive also found old masking tape along the bottom inner edge of the door . A calculated guess says there has been some kind of repair and paintwork...when I bought the car the garage never mentioned that the car had been damaged...(nothing new there I suppose).

Has anyone got any info on how I can find out if the car has had a bump and been repaired ?. I dont want to go back to the dealer until Ive got some proof.

Am I right in thinking that the info I want would only be available if any repairs were paid for by an insurance company ???

    Thanks folks.......Bob

Get an AA inspection done on the car. They can tell paint thickness etc. Or have a bodyshop look at it.

If an insurance company has carried out a repair on it matey, it should be listed in the HPI register.

Any decent dealer will/should HPI a car before selling it on anyway.

It won't Alex, thats the pointlessness of the HPi register.

HPi only show if the car is an insurance writeoff, not if it has been repaired. Hence so many cars on the road these days that have been dinged and there is no way of knowing with an official register.

It may just have been scratch repairs, many dealers will repair minor faults cheap to get more for a 'perfect' car.

Any repair work if carried out to a high standard would not reduce the value of the car, though obviously in this case, as you have spoted it, it might not be a reputable repair.

Don't get fuel on it, if it's a cheap repair fuel can cause the paint to melt!

As mentioned its best to have the paint checked for thickness as they can tell you exactly if the cars been painted. Most cars will have had some sort of paintwork (some have rectification work before leaving the factory). If the car has been an ex-rental car then it has near enough definately had paintwork, most paintwork is to repair scuffs and scratches as opposed to accident damage.

Well I'm just in the process of acquiring a paint thickness gauge through a group buy on www.detailingworld.co.uk and would be only too happy to check it for you at a meet. Alternatively robbieben has his name down for one on the same group buy and I'm sure would be able to check for you being a lot closer.
